The Afghan National Police prevented a major improvised explosive device attack January 11, when they discovered a vehicle containing a large amount of explosives in Kandahar City. A sports utility vehicle filled with approximately 400 kilograms of explosive material was rigged and wired as a vehicle-borne IED.
KABUL, Afghanistan (January 16)
General Matiullah Qatih, the commander of the Kandahar ANP, explained the sequence of events that led to the discovery of the vehicle.
“We received a report about a suspect vehicle inside Kandahar Province, we then ordered all our checkpoints and our police to be on the lookout,” he said. “Within a few hours, we recognized the vehicle was parked in a garage and was ready for an attack. In coordination with the Kandahar PRT and ISAF we were able to defuse the explosives. The case is under investigation and we hope to arrest the criminals responsible for this as soon as possible.”
“This is yet another example of the progress of Afghan National Security Forces in providing improved security for their fellow citizens,” said Colonel Jamie Cade, Deputy Commander of Task Force Kandahar.
In addition, two armed men who attempted to breach the security cordon established by the ANP during this incident were arrested and taken into custody.
The Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, said “I appreciate the brave and outstanding work of the Kandahar Police and I have asked the Chief of Kandahar Police to reward the police who thwarted the potential vehicle attack. The Ministry of Interior assures the people of Afghanistan that their police will serve them in the best possible manner.”
